Conductors, Insulators, and Magnetism!

Hey hey kiddos!

Today we will be learning all about Magnetism, Conductors of Heat, and Insulators of Heat!                                                                                                                                            

1) To start off, open up your Science Notebook to your Physical Properties Chart on Page 7. We will first look at what magnetism is!

Click on the Magnetism Activity Answers Link below and use the materials at your table to complete this activity!

2) Open up your Science Notebook and fill in the Table of Contents like I have below.

3) Next, go to the back corner of the room and grab 1 piece of colored or white paper and a pair of scissors. 

4) You will be making a foldable in your Science Notebook for Conductors and Insulators. 

-Fold your piece of paper in half hamburger style. 

-Cut down the middle of the front half of the paper. See the images below. 

-On 1 side write "Conductors" and on the other write "Insulators"

-Using the marker, on the inside of your foldable, draw a line down the middle and a line across the top of the inside. 

Open the Science Saurus Book to Page 292. Read page 292-293 about how heat moves and about conductors and insulators of heat energy. Use these pages to write down the definitions of both, some examples, and colored pictures for conductors and insulators. When you are finished, glue or tape the back side of your foldable onto Page 8 of your notebook.

Welcome to Unit 2! 

Click on the powerpoint below called "What is Matter? Slides". Look at all the different topics that we will be covering in Unit 2. Just in case you didn't get to see them all yesterday :)

In the powerpoint, you will add a Unit 2 colored index card to your vocab cards, create a vocab card for "matter", correct your Tuesday Morning Work, and do a matching activity with the 3 states of matter. 

When finished with the powerpoint, you will then watch the 3 videos below. Make sure you have your headphones plugged in please! :)

You will now answer the discussion questions below. Make sure in your answer you write #1, #2, #3, and #4 next to your answer so I know which question you are answering!

Discussion Questions to Answer in Schoology: 

1) In your own words, what is matter? Give 2 examples of matter. 

2) What are the 3 states of matter?

3) How do particles and molecules change from 1 phase or state to another? (i.e. how does a solid change into a liquid?)

4) Give an example of a solid, liquid, or a gas changing phases. Example= A liquid (water) turning to a solid (ice). 

 Make sure you respond to all 4 questions! You must also reply to at least 3 of your teammate's responses to get full credit!

Hey hey kiddos! Today we will be learning all about the Steps of the Scientific Method so that we can test hypotheses and conduct experiments just like scientists do!

Next, using our Bowling for Dominoes Lab from yesterday, try and identify what we did for each step of the Scientific Method!

Look at the Popcorn Experiment #1 at the link below. Try and identify what these scientists did for each step of the Scientific Method to find out which popcorn kernels (yellow or white) produced a greater volume of popcorn after being popped. How could they have made their hypothesis better?
